Trader Joe’s Hack: $3 Gyro Sandwich

by Shaina

The first time I learned of the gyro sandwich I was 18 and had just started working at a small pizzeria on the central coast. Oddly enough we sold gyros there. The husband of the owner was from Greece. It quickly became my new favorite sandwich and also my least favorite word. I’ve heard people pronounce the word gyro probably 20 different ways. If you’re one of those people, lets spare you further embarrassment. Its pronounced [YEE-roh]. Just like the European coin. *phew*, glad thats out of the way.

For years the only place I could eat this magnificent sandwich was at work. You couldn’t find this meat at any regular grocery store. Now that the gyro has become more popular, stores like Trader Joe’s and Select Sprouts stores have begun to sell sliced gyro meat. Trader joe’s gives you 8oz of meat for only $3.99. Thats enough for 3 sandwiches! They also carry tzatziki sauce, but I prefer to make my own. Its very quick and easy. It also tastes better. However, if you’re really short on time the Trader Joe’s brand is a good option. Lets get to the recipe shall we!
